Throughout our lives, different people, places, events, and things will mold us into who we become as a person. For me personally, I believe my parents, sister, brother, grandparents, friends, school, band, sports, job and living in York are things that influenced me. These people and things have made me the person I am today. I like to think that where I am now, at 17 years of age, is just the beginning of my life. With saying that, I hope that I can add to this extensively. I hope to meet many people and do many things that further my personality.
Beginning with my number one influence, Michael and Marla Davis; otherwise known as my parents. My father grew up in Virginia and my mother grew up in Indiana. Both of these locations have let me see the world outside of York. Which meant constantly having to travel for every holiday and/or occasion. They both have worked hard throughout their career and marriage. They have taught me many morals and lessons that I will always hold true to myself. I would not be where I am today without them. They both have supported me emotionally, financially, in school, extracirricular, and much more. They are by far number one.
Next is my sister. Meredith is 24 years old and a 6th grade teacher. Being the oldest of my brother and I, she set the high standards and expectations. Though sometimes it's hard to compare, I am glad she set them. We never stop comparing what we do to one another.
Following Meredith, would be Michael. He is 21 years old and graduated from college in May. Though he is a lot different from Meredith, he also set high standards. Yet, he broke a lot of rules, allowing me to do more with my parents. Without either of them growing up, our house or long car rides would not be close to the same.
Another large influence would be my grandparents. I have only known my mother's side my whole life. They live in a small town in Indiana. I see large dedication in both of them. My grandma was a Reading Aid in the local elementary school. She retired when she was 77. I can always depend on them to laugh and have a fun time. My grandpa is now 82. He continues to farm about 1,500 acres. The farm has now been our family for over 100 years. They both have worked extremely hard to send all of their kids to private colleges. They are both in good health and have taught me how hard work pays off in life. I hope to become similar to them, when I am in my 100's (Yes, plan to live that long), They are my role models.
I believe friends make or break your life. Anyone who tells you different, they're wrong. Friends may not be the difference between succeeding and failing, but in overall happiness, they do. Look around, the students who do not have friends are not happy. I might label it as miserable. There has never been a point in my life that I did not have friends. Though some of my friends have come and gone into my life, and some have stayed for years, I have learned so much from each one. Can you imagine not having peers to talk to prior, during and after school? I believe we owe a lot to our friends. I hope my friends know how much they do mean to me. I might not always be the nicest, or easiest person to get along with, but I do hope that they know how important they truly are.
This is my last year of high school. This is the 12th year. I had one year of kindergarten and two years of preschool. I have learned a lot from school. Both educationally and towards life in general. With educators in my family, I always knew what the expectation was. Homework was always done and tests were always studied for. I learned what preperation it takes to pass.
Though band is not my first item I list about myself, it is certainly important. I have been in band since Sinking Springs in 4th grade. It has taught me a lot about teamwork, individual work, and balancing time. The thing I like about it the most is the social aspect, being that most of my friends participate in it as well.
From about the age of three to fourteen, I played baseball, basketball, and soccer. I love sports, but quit in high school. I probably regret doing that... But life goes on. I was always involved in them, which I also learned many life lessons similar to band.
For almost one and a half years, I have been an employee at the Country Club of York. Working during weekends and weekdays taught me the need to balance my time efficently. I also had to compromise on a few things like parties and saturday night movie nights. Also, my manners and mannerism are constantly being tested. I would like to believe that I have become more polite through that experience.
Lastly, living in York has put a unique influence on my life. Though you will mostly hear me complaining about York, or Pennsylvania in general, it is my hometown. Besides the constant bordum and not so attractive Wal-Martians it is a good place to raise a family. It has some beautiful parts (and not so beautiful parts) and a historical side. Though I am constantly annoyed by the people who believe "Yous" is a word, I like Central, and believe we are blessed to attend the school we do... Besides the sometimes ridiculous rules...
Matt,
It's true what you said about friends and how much they impact your life, because they're the people you're around all the time and they influence how you act and you feel every day. I like how you said that York has influenced your life, because all you hear is people complaining about York and how much they want to leave. But the truth is that we're all lucky to live in such a nice environment and have such a great school to go to because the majority of the world is not as fortunate as we are, and people seem to forget that.
